Sarah began her career in education with Teach for America in Atlanta, GA after graduating from Kenyon College where she majored in English and creative writing.  Sarah then fell in love with boarding schools while teaching at Asheville School in Asheville, NC before going on to earn her master's degree at the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University.  Prior to joining TAIS, Sarah served as the Upper School Director and then the Director for Laurel's Center for Research on Girls at Laurel School in Shaker Heights, OH.  Sarah is particularly interested in how schools can leverage the strengths of their missions, teachers, and students to meet their strategic goals and to create beneficial networks and partnerships. Sarah works with leadership teams and faculties at independent schools on change management around leadership roles and structures, program development, and curricular revision. In working with students, Sarah focuses on authentic student voice and leadership, student mentorship, the power of students' sense of purpose in education, and skills-based approaches to equity and inclusion and civil discourse. She has presented on these topics at a range of venues, including the POCC conference and TAIS member school faculty in-services. Sarah also serves on both the Nonpublic Schools Advisory Council and the Committee of Practitioners for the Tennessee Department of Education where she represents TAIS member schools and works to improve collaboration and communication between independent and public schools as well as forward equity and access for all students in Tennessee. Sarah lives in Memphis with her husband and their three children.
