Anti-Racism in World Languages: Charting a Dynamic Path Forward
This past year has pivoted the nation into an unprecedented year of social justice, social change and a call to action. As the world responds to a global pandemic and racial tensions, how can the language classroom serve as a space for positive social change? This keynote will encourage and challenge educators to engage current events in meaningful ways. Dr. Krishauna Hines-Gaither will also provide tools for world language educators to chart a dynamic path forward.

Participants will engage in roundtable discussions with fellow NCAIS World Language educators. Topics may include subjects such as project-based learning in the world language classroom, digital tech tools, best practices in lower school language labs, and building conversational skills, just to name a few. Participants will be polled prior to the event for ideas and willingness to facilitate the conversation.

Dawn Samples, Aventa | Effective Instructional and Assessment Practices that Lead to Proficiency As language teachers across the country are striving to help learners and programs focus on proficiency outcomes, how are we ensuring they are inspired to continue learning and growing in the language? Participants will examine best practices that lead to proficiency and explore pathways of attaining the Seal of Biliteracy, incentivizing them to continue their journey and growth in proficiency.

Make A Plan For Success | Brittany Probst and Meghan Folger, Apex Friendship High School
Adequately preparing students for the AP Culture and Language exam is daunting, especially if you have to do it all in one (short!) Spring semester. Come see how two Wake County French teachers have worked to vertically align their lower-level courses with the rigorous demands of the AP Language and Culture exam through the early introduction of the AP tasks, and an emphasis on culture and communication from Day 1 of Level 1.

Developing Intercultural Communication Skills to Generate Empathy and Compassion and Combat Xenophobia and Racism | Xiaolin Dai, Summit School
This presentation discusses the development of intercultural communication skills as a means to generate empathy and compassion and reduce xenophobia and racism among students. It will focus on the following areas: 1) Designing conversations and activities within Chinese language learning units to generate empathy and compassion through understanding Chinese language culture, and 2) Deploying strategies to combat and overcome xenophobia and racism in class, including practicing consciousness of our own prejudices.

Ditch the Textbook and Let's Get Talking | Constanza De Radcliffe and Jennifer Garci, Durham Academy
Standards-Based Instructional Design begins at the unit level. Teachers need practical tools at their disposal to "let go of the book" and create effective units that use authentic sources, challenge students with interpretive, presentational, and interpersonal activities, and culminate in meaningful summative assessments while aligning with ACTFL Can-Do statements. This workshop is a "how to get started roadmap" for teachers who want to switch to Standards-Based Instructional Design.
