The Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (TAIS) represents over 65 independent schools across Tennessee and northern Mississippi. As a non-profit governed by a Board of Directors and led by a team of passionate lifelong educators, TAIS supports Member Schools that provide strong academic programs, appreciate students and faculty as unique and whole individuals, foster community-engaged school cultures, and facilitate the moral and ethical growth of their students. All TAIS Member Schools maintain non-discriminatory policies, are incorporated as nonprofit organizations governed by a Board of Trustees, and are accredited either by the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), Cognia, or the state of Tennessee.

Our Leadership & Governance

TAIS is led by a dedicated staff of lifelong educators and governed by a Board of Directors composed of current Heads of School from TAIS Member Schools. In addition to guiding the association, TAIS leadership advocates on behalf of Member Schools across the state:

  • A TAIS Board Member holds a seat on the TSSAA Board, representing independent schools in statewide athletic governance.
  • The TAIS Executive Director serves on the Governor’s Non-public Schools Advisory Council.
  • The TAIS Executive Director partners with a lobbyist in legislative advocacy, ensuring the representation of Member Schools’ interests.

These roles ensure TAIS schools have a voice in statewide policy and access to timely, relevant information.
