Bill Hovenden (2012)

Dr. Bill Hovenden was originally appointed Headmaster of Sumner Academy in 1980.  He resigned in 1986 to work as an educational consultant, and later became Headmaster of Westchester Country Day School in High Point, North Carolina.  In 1991 he was invited to return to Sumner Academy as Headmaster.  Under his leadership it has established itself as one of the top academic independent PreK-8 schools in Middle Tennessee.

Bill's leadership has consistently extended beyond his own school.  He served on the TAIS Board of Directors for nine years, including two as President.  He has also presented numberous workshops for administrators and teachers, often under the auspices of TAIS - more than any other Head of School in the state.  Most recently, in 2012 he helped found the Edison School in Henderson, Tennessee, which serves students with learning differences.
