Ellis L. Haguewood  (2018)

Ellis Haguewood served as headmaster of Memphis University School from 1995 to 2017 and as a member of the school’s faculty and administration for a total of 48 years. A former MUS English instructor and recipient of the school’s Distinguished Teaching Award, he interpreted the role of headmaster as head teacher. He remained connected to the classroom, teaching a Lower School class on the Old Testament for many years. He also served as director of student activities, dean of students, director of summer school, and Upper School principal.  

The Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association recognized him as a Distinguished Service Honoree in 2010 and named him to its Hall of Fame in 2017. He was The Commercial Appeal’s MOST Principled Principal in 2009. The Memphis chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals named him Outstanding Executive Leader in 2007. He served as president of the Memphis Association of Independent Schools and as secretary of the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools. He was a member of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association Division II Committee from its inception in 1997 until his retirement in 2017, also serving as chairman. 

He received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Harding University and a Master of Arts in English from the University of Memphis. He met his wife, Peggy, in junior high at Harding Academy in Memphis. They have been married for 50 years and have two children and three grandchildren.
